The Center for Comparative History and Politics hosted an international spring school for young researchers “The City in the Spotlight: Methodological and Epistemological Challenges of Studying Urban Governance”. The school took place in Perm from 15 to 21 April 2018.
The school was organized as part of the”‘Shifting paradigms: towards participatory and effective urban planning in Germany, Russia, and Ukraine (the TRIPAR Project)” project funded by Volkswagen Foundation, together with the Ukrainian Researchers Society, the Leibniz Institute for Regional Geography, and RWTH Aachen University. Core areas of the school covered a wide range of questions regarding the urban governance and current methodological debates about studying it. MA and Ph.D. students from 7 countries (Armenia, Bulgari, Germany, Georgia, India, Russia and France) have presented their research projects and got feedback from experts.
Program included lectures by Patrick Le Galès (Science Po, France) on different approaches and methods of studying urban governance; Paul Goode (University of Bath, UK) on conducting fieldwork; Wladimir Sgibnew (Leibniz Institute for Regional Geography, Germany) on Lefebvre’s theoretical concepts; Andrei Golovin (MLA+, Russia) on urban governance and planning in Perm; Oksana Zaporozhets (Higher School of Economics, Russia) on micro-level urban studies; Anna Zhelnina (City University of New York, USA) on challenges that could be faced using qualitative research methods and conducting interviews. Aleksander Sheludkov (Institute of Geography, Russian Academy of Sciences, Russia) led the workshop on spatial data analysis and visualization using R and QGIS.
Besides lectures, presentations, panel discussions, and roundtables, school’s participants took part in a site visit to the Nightingales garden and Krasnova district, which are original cases for TRIPAR project. Also, Dmitrii Moskvin (Ekaterinburg, Russia) gave a tour on constructivism in Rabochii Poselok neighborhood. The closing session took place in the Perm Museum of Contemporary Art PERMM.
